Million Dollar Mermaid: Annette Kellerman

Million Dollar Mermaid: Annette Kellerman
Event on 2017-06-14 10:00:00
“I insist that swimming is not only a splendid sport for women but that it is the sport for women — the one sport … in which she can fully compete with men."
– Annette Kellerman, Physical Beauty (1918)

Annette Kellerman pioneered competitive swimming for women, starred in American silent films, published books and inspired generations of women. Her life and achievements will now be honoured in a new exhibition,Million Dollar Mermaid: Annette Kellerman, at the Powerhouse Museum from 10 August 2016.

Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) Director, Dolla Merrillees, said the exhibition shines a light on an important local personality.

“Annette Kellerman’s story has become legendary. She achieved an astonishing level of success, both at home and abroad, becoming an international celebrity as a swimmer, vaudeville entertainer, film star and a pioneer of women’s health and fitness. Her fame earned her the titles 'The Australian Mermaid', 'The Diving Venus' and 'The Perfect Woman.' This exhibition invites visitors to dive into the inspiring and entertaining story of this incredible Australian.”

Drawing extensively from the Museum’s performing arts collections and curated by Peter Cox the Million Dollar Mermaid exhibition will showcase Kellerman’s personal collection of costumes, photos, memorabilia and film footage. Highlights include various styles of her one-piece swimsuits, stage outfits and a spectacular costume from the Hollywood biopic Million Dollar Mermaid, in which Esther Williams portrayed Kellerman. The exhibition will include footage from the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s collection, showing Annette Kellerman performing an underwater adagio ballet in 1939. Multimedia artist collective 66b/cell has developed a visual installation with projection mapping where visitors will experience the beauty and artistry of Kellerman’s underwater performances in an immersive, sensory environment.

Born in Sydney in 1886, Kellerman took up swimming as a young child. She became a teenage champion, excelled at diving and set world records in swimming. Having outgrown the pools of Sydney and Melbourne, Kellerman relocated to London aged 18.

She made headlines for her marathon swims in the Thames, Seine and Danube rivers and was the first woman to attempt to swim the English Channel. At a time when female swimmers were expected to wear cumbersome garments, she defied convention with her practical self-styled one-piece swimsuits, one of which she created by sewing stockings onto a men’s bathing suit.

As her star rose, Kellerman developed a vaudeville act which she performed in England and the United States. It combined diving, swimming and graceful underwater ballet with the elaborate staging of tanks, waterfalls and slides, supported by a large cast of water nymphs performing routines that foreshadowed synchronised swimming.

Kellerman starred as a mermaid character in a series of feature films and performed her own dangerous stunts. She wrote self-help books titled How to Swim and Physical Beauty: How to Keep It, and began a health food business after retiring from performing.

An unmissable exhibition paying homage to an extraordinary Australian, Million Dollar Mermaid will be on display at the Powerhouse Museum from 10 August 2016.

Age: PADI offers SCUBA Diving experiences and certification courses for children as young as 8 years of age. Certain physiological effects of SCUBA Diving on a child’s developing body may pose risks therefore PADI India and Absolute SCUBA restrict kids below the age of 8 to undertake SCUBA diving activity. Similarly, there does not exist an upper age limit for diving; the only criteria are physical health, ability and enthusiasm, of course.

Medical Fitness: As SCUBA Diving is an adventure sport and comes with its own set of risks, PADI India has laid down certain medical conditions under which SCUBA diving may be unadvisable. In order to successfully undertake any diving program across the range of PADI courses, one needs to be in reasonable medical health. PADI has provided a medical questionnaire for self-evaluation which our PADI professionals will recommend every participant to read through.

What to expect: Details about the SCUBA experience
As part of the 3 hour Discover SCUBA session, watch yourself transform from an excited novice into someone well-versed with the sport of SCUBA diving. Alongside, learn our lingo too; SCUBA is short for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, that’s one to start with.

As you arrive for your SCUBA diving session, you will be briefed by your PADI Instructor about the history of SCUBA, the do’s & don’t’ s and taught a whole new non-verbal language to help you communicate underwater. This informative land-based session will be over before you know it, and you’ll find yourself much better prepared to enjoy the SCUBA session! Your PADI Instructor will provide you with world-class SCUBA equipment customized to your fit. And not just any gear – the best SCUBA gear in India!

Once you’re in the water, you’ll be taught to breathe in the confines of the shallows, until you feel comfortable to move to the deep end. When you’ve reached your comfort zone, you will be accompanied by your instructor for a ONE on ONE underwater cruise, and can do all sorts of cool stuff underwater. You get to experience Neutral Buoyancy – the Holy Grail of the SCUBA Diver – which is the awesome feeling of being Weightless Underwater!

Buoyancy control will allow you to try your hand at backflips, somersaults and other snazzy underwater tricks, and we will take great pictures of you making unforgettable memories.

This information will help seed your knowledgebase for root cause/affect and cost/value tradeoff centered decision processes. Industry standards and certification programs will be discussed. Both theory and practical experience are blended together with case histories to demonstrate good, risky and poor results that can be expected at design, during fabrication or in the field. Photographs, charts, handouts and demonstrations illustrate concepts, making it easy for beginners and experienced alike to sharpen their understanding of tradeoffs associated with specifying, selling, buying, manufacturing, installing and maintaining FRP equipment.   Learning Objectives After attending this course, participants should be able to: 1. Differentiate and specify good, better and best FRP laminate designs for all applications. 2. Choose industry standards for design, fabrication and inspection purposes. 3. Determine which industry certification programs to use when. 4. Identify all types and compositions of laminates. 5. Assess the design basis for proposed and as built FRP laminates. 6. Describe laminate defects in new and degradation (“corrosion”) in used equipment. 7. Correlate deficiencies in new equipment to failure mechanisms observed in used. 8. Apply concepts to sound decisions that balance cost, risk and public welfare.   Who Should Attend:   FRP Decision Makers Inspectors and QA/QC Personnel Designers, Engineers and PE’s Owner/User and Resident Engineers Specification Writers Installers, Operators and Maintenance Project Managers Salespeople Purchasing Agents and Buyers Those New to Industry   Prerequisites: No prior knowledge, special areas of study or experience are required. Animal Collective

Animal Collective
Event on 2017-06-27 21:00:00
with Eyvind Kang and Jessika Kenney
At the beginning there were two of them Avey Tare and Panda Bear banging drums and tweaking synths in their bedrooms, singing strange and sometimes heartbreaking songs about imaginary friends and childhood pets. Carried along by washes of squalling feedback, the music was noisy, and it was weird, but it was, at heart, pop music. This was the start of Animal Collective. For fifteen years Dave Porter (Tare), Noah Lennox (Bear), Brian Geologist Weitz and Josh Deakin Dibb have been rewriting the musical map, their line-up and aesthetic shifting with each astonishing release as they continue their pursuit of a new psychedelia. Their wild path has taken them from cramped concrete basement shows and forest floor singalongs to immersive installations at the Guggenheim and performances to millions on national television. So where now from here?Caveman circles, says Lennox, discussing the vision for their eleventh full-length album, Painting With; Caveman circles, the first Ramones record, early Beatles and electronically produced. I think that was kind of our starting point. Dizzyingly upbeat and gloriously realised, their latest LP bounces and pops with an urgent, ecstatic energy, propelled by polyrhythmic beats and gurgling modular synth, with Lennox and Portners vocals gleefully falling in and out of syncopation and off-kilter harmony. The songs are as experimental and deeply textured as anything that has come before but sound as sharp and snappy as chart hits, finding the band at both their most minimal and most ambitious: The idea with cavemen was about being more primitive the way we sounded when we were first playing together in New York says Portner. I feel like what we were doing with the last record [2012s Centipede Hz] was something a little more complicated. This time we wanted to strip it down and simplify it, like techno and punk And then put the Animal Collective filter on it all.Working as a trio, Portner, Lennox and Weitz began trading demos in early 2015, pursuing a goal of what Portner calls really short pop songs: no B.S, get in, get out material The three met up in Ashville during that Spring and began exploring the songs together. I feel like lyrically theres some really tough stuff says Lennox, but the intention was for the songs to have the spirit of trying to work things out. To make things better. The group made a conscious decision not to tour the songs first in an attempt to keep them fresh, something Weitz found to be a freeing process. That shift in perspective contributed to how much space is on the record.Recording took place in the legendary EastWest Studios in Hollywood, home to sessions by The Beach Boys and Marvin Gaye. Making the space feel like home was essential: they lit candles on lily pads and projected a two-hour reel of dinosaur movies spliced together by Daves sister Abby on a constant loop. A baby pool was set up to help add to the vibe of the room, but the group soon discovered it sounded amazing when thudded and treated with effects. Everything sounded good in that room says Weitz. You can hear it. Everything about Painting With feels crisp and direct as though delivered in super high-definition Technicolor; the pitter-pattering handclaps of Lying In The Grass, the delirious arcade-hall rave of Burglars, the galloping bass and piano of the radiant On Delay even Bea Arthurs introduction to Golden Gal seems to shimmer. The interplay between Avey Tare and Panda Bears vocals (recorded while sat on high pedestals to lend the singing an airy quality) is brought front and centre with an uncharacteristic clarity: With the vocals, its not like a typical call and response or harmony. says Lennox, Its like two voices become one. Without one singer it doesnt really work the same way. They dance with each other. Portner interrupts: Both vocals are meant to complete one thought. The band put much of this down to their close collaboration with engineer Sonny Diperri: He played a big part in how the vocals sounded. We didnt put a lot of effects on the voices like in the past We tried to be really careful about reverb, to not make everything washed out. When there is echo on the album almost everything is acoustic reverb. It attests to the greatness of those old studios its cool you can record in your apartment, plenty of great music has been recorded that way, but there is something to say about the time that went into crafting these rooms. It feels like a lost art form.In their search for more organic sounds, the trio challenged themselves to incorporate elements they usually find off-putting, either structurally or sonically I remember specifically we brought up saxophone and brass instruments recalls Portner. They enlisted the services of multireedist Colin Stetson whose resum includes collaborations with Arcade Fire, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Bon Iver and Tom Waits to appear on the albums rapturous, swirling opener, FloriDaDa, an ode to breaking boundaries and not seeing any separation in people or places: We were huge fans of Colins and the sound that he has is super unique. We dont notate a score for somebody, so it was cool to have him come in and lay down a bunch of ideas while the song was playing. After discovering John Cale was a fan of their music, the group invited him down to the studio to record drones for Hocus Pocus a slow-burning collage of stroboscopic vocals and bleeping, squelching modular synth that gives way to delirious release. Discovering the song wasnt in a key the viola could be tuned for came as a happy surprise as they found themselves working with Cales material in new and exciting ways, his bowed tones and electronic manipulations forming a hypnotic transition into the beautifully sun-warped Vertical. Its just that that kind openness to playing with expectation and experimenting with form that lies at the heart of this personal and human album. When we were doing (2007s) Strawberry Jam, I thought it would be cool to literally rename ourselves The Painters. recalls Portner, Everyone kind of rolled their eyes at that one. But Noah brought the idea back [this time]. We talked about painting cubism, Dada, these distorted ways of looking at things Its all there in Painting With: the sound of artists finding vivid new ways to shape their ideas and challenge their own conventions, creating music that is at once startlingly fresh and still recognisably, uniquely Animal Collective.

Southeastern Outings Short Hike and Glorious, Long Swim

Southeastern Outings Short Hike and Glorious, Long Swim
Event on 2017-07-15 09:00:00
Presented by Southeastern Outings

July 15, 2017

Strenuous walk through the woods and down a short, but very steep hill in DeSoto State Park to the huge pool which many of you have seen from above when at DeSoto Falls.  We’ll be swimming and playing for most of the day in the West Fork of Little River.  You can also walk and play in the section of the river that flows out from the pool.  It takes only 20 minutes to walk from where we’ll park our cars to the water. All but the last 75 feet or so is simple walking on fairly level ground. BUT the last 75 feet are quite strenuous, requiring some rock and root climbing. So we are rating the hiking portion of this outing as strenuous.

You must be able to swim to participate in this outing!  Well-behaved, properly supervised children age 8 and up welcome, but parents are responsible for all risks to their children.

After our swim and float, we’ll walk less than one mile back to the cars and then go for showers and an optional dinner.

Please bring picnic lunch, water, swimsuit, river shoes and any kind of a flotation device you wish.  See float note below for information about acquiring floats. Dan Frederick will bring his float pump to pump up floats at the edge of the river.  Hot showers for .00 per person available before dinner.  Please bring shower things and change of clothes if you wish to clean up and change for dinner.  Depart 9:00 a.m. from Applebee’s Restaurant Trussville.

Info: David Freeman, 205/491-8845

Float Note

Substantial, fabric-covered, inflatable, vinyl, rectangular floats like you use to ride the waves at the Gulf work well.  Trip leader Dan Frederick has adult size floats for each (72 inches long) and children’s size floats (60 inches long for each) for sale ONLY at the start of outings Dan attends.  Please pay either with exact change or a check made out to SEO.  First come, first served.
